After the President had given directives for the country to have a 42-day lockdown last year, popular academician cum political critic Dr. Stella Nyanzi is noted to have fled with her family to Germany, posting pictures at the airport while ridiculing the political system back home.
Yet again, Dr. Nyanzi has fled the country citing primarily, the lack of freedom of speech following writer, Kakwenza Rukirabashaija’s recent predicament with the powers that be.
Dr Stella Nyanzi, a writer herself and a sold-out critic of the NRM government has faced the same predicament before, as she was arrested and detained on grounds of offensive communication to the powers that be.
Yesterday night, she took to her Facebook page and wrote a post bidding farewell, while announcing Germany, as her next destination.
“Go to where you are wanted! Go to where your skills and talents are appreciated. Go to where your children are safe even when you speak and write ugly truths to power. Go to where you will flourish when you work hard.
When Kakwenza Rukirabashaija was abducted from his home, illegally detained in unknown military facilities for fourteen days, tortured during interrogation and denied access to his lawyers or doctors for fourteen days, I knew it was time to beat it and flee (yet again). I refuse to be gagged. I refuse to be silenced! Critical writers must never be threatened merely for writing critically about brutal abusers of power flourishing under dictator Museveni.
Bye-bye Museveni’s Uganda! Germany, please be good to me and my children…,” she posted.
Today morning, she took to her Facebook to subliminally confirm that she had landed in Germany.
“The smell of freedom is very sweet, even on a gray winter morning! To be free and cold is much better than living fearfully in chains in the warm equatorial weather…” she noted.
However, what remains uncertain is whether Stella is in Germany permanently or she is bound to return like she usually does.
