Herbert Edmund Ariko declared winner of Soroti East by-election

NRM’s Herbert Edmund Ariko was on Thursday declared the winner of the Soroti East Member of Parliament by-election.

According to the Soroti City Returning Officer, Christine Eyuu, Ariko garnered 9,407 votes against Moses Attan’s 8,771 votes. The Uganda Peoples’ Congress-UPC candidate, Pascal Amuriat got 115 votes.

The polls were characterized by violence and reports of ballot stuffing, especially at Omalera, Otatai, and Owolo polling stations.

Last month, the Court of Appeal nullified the election of FDC’s Attan after Ariko contested the results on grounds that his strongholds; Aloet and Opiyai wards, were erroneously annexed to Soroti West, which he noted disfranchised more than 5,000 voters.

Winnie Nwagi confirms concert dates and venue

It looks like the wait for Winnie Nwagi’s maiden concert is over as the singer has confirmed that she will hold a concert this year.

For about two years, Nwagi’s fans have been pestering her record label, Swangz Avenue, to organize a concert for her.

On Friday, Nwagi through her social media announced that she will stage a concert on September 9 at Lugogo Cricket Oval.

Upon the revelation, the singer’s fans vowed to swarm the cricket oval to support her.

Witnesses tell court that they were tortured to pin Ssegirinya, Ssewanyana

On Thursday, five suspects who were arrested together with jailed MPs Muhammad Ssegirinya (Kawmpe North) and Allan Ssewanyana (Makindye West) in relation to the new spate of killings in the Masaka sub-region last year pinned security operatives at the Chieftancy of Military Intelligence (CMI) for torturing them while in detention before forcing them to pin the two MPs.

The two MPs who have been on remand for almost a year were produced at the International Crimes Division of the High Court in Kololo for the pre-trial of their murder cases.

The state attorney asked the court to be given a few more days to share with the lawyers some of the remaining evidence.

Justice Jane Elizabeth Alidviza ordered the state attorney to make evidence available to all defence counsel led by Erias Lukwago before court resumes on August 11.

Commonwealth Games 2022: Team Uganda

The 2022 Commonwealth kicked off on Friday in Birmingham, and Uganda will once again have a very tall order to win medals. Over 60 athletes are set to represent the black-yellow-red flag.

Uganda will be represented in eleven sports disciplines; rugby, wrestling, squash, netball, swimming, para-swimming, table tennis, badminton, cycling, boxing, and athletics.

On Friday, the Rugby 7s were in action. They lost the first game against Kenya, 24-14. And the second game against Australia ended in a tie of 12-12. The team faces Jamaica today in their last game in pool D.
