MP Ssewungu asks Gen Elwelu to arrest First Son Muhoozi

Kalungu County West Member of Parliament, Joseph Gonzaga Ssewungu, has asked the Deputy Commander of the Defense Forces (D/CDF), Gen. Peter Elwelu to exercise the UPDF leadership authority and arrest the First Son and Commander of the Land Force, Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Ssewungu made the request as Gen. Elwelu appeared on the floor of parliament to respond to cases of increased impunity by the UPDF officers.

“I want to thank Gen. Elwelu but I want to send a question to you. You are the Deputy CDF. Can you arrest Gen. Muhoozi, who is masquerading around campaigning yet he is still a serving soldier?” Ssewungu asked.

Last Thursday, a concerned lawyer, Gawaya Tegulle, petitioned the Constitutional Court, seeking an order directing Muhoozi to desist from carrying on political activities while he is still a serving officer in the army.

In his petition, Tegulle also wants Muhoozi prosecuted for treason because of the activities on his Twitter handle, which he says are political in nature and aimed at taking over power as successor to his father, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, using methods and means that are not consistent with the constitution.

On Monday, the Constitutional Court summoned Muhoozi to respond to the petition. He was given 10 days to file his defense upon receipt of the summons.

Also summoned is the Chief of Defense Forces (CDF) Wilson Mbadi and the Attorney General, Kiryowa Kiwanuka.

Meanwhile, Elwelu has told Parliament that the soldier who was filmed harassing a traffic police officer, has been arrested and will ‘face the law.’
