Former Journalist hands himself to police after murdering lover

Monica Amongi, an employee of the Electoral Commission, breathed her last on Tuesday evening after her ex-lover ended her life.

According to a report by the New Vision newspaper, the decomposing body of Amongi, 27, was discovered on Friday (April 1, 2022) evening in her bedsit at Anaiober cell, Anai Ward in Lira City West Division, three days after she went missing.

It is alleged that the man she had lived with as a partner stealthily entered her house and assaulted her to death, locking the house and disappearing, leaving a note behind.

According to the post-mortem report, Amongi died of a head injury due to blunt physical trauma associated with the homicidal assault.

The key suspect

In the wee hours of Saturday morning, Jasper Awio, a former news reporter, allegedly walked into the Lira City East Division Station and handed himself over.

He reportedly told the police that he killed his lover, Monica Amongi, for rejecting him.

On the fateful day, Amongi is said to have bought 2 kg of meat, which she cooked. She later invited Robinah Kizito, her cousin sister, saying that the meal had been prepared for her.

Amongi’s landlady, Mary Acen, said she last saw the deceased on Tuesday evening together with her cousin sister who had come to visit her.

On Wednesday, Acen said that a foul smell covered the area, but she failed to locate its source.

The following day in the afternoon, a neighbor of the deceased complained that the foul smell had intensified and a swarm of flies was seen on the window of Amongi’s room.

Once the case was reported to the local leaders, they broke into the room only to find the decomposing body lying on the bed.

Since it was dark Police stayed on the scene until morning when the body was advanced to the mortuary.

According to Kizito, the suspect was allegedly beating Amongi which forced the couple to separate in front of local leaders last year.

The suspect is reported to have been seen near the deceased’s home ever since then while issuing threats to kill her.

The region Police commander Anatoli said that he did not have details of the incident and referred this reporter to the force’s public relations officer Jimmy Okema.

Nevertheless, the suspect attempted to commit suicide as he was rushed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital after his health condition worsened.

“Yes, it happened, I did it,” Awio said without giving reasons for his brazen act.

After killing the woman, Awio admitted to drinking pesticide in a move to end his own life but it was ineffective.
