Controversial city lawyer Male Mabirizi has spoken out in the wake of his recent conviction.
Male was yesterday sentenced to 18 months in prison by Justice Musa Ssekaana for contempt of court. Ssekaana issued an arrest warrant for Mabirizi.
Last evening, Mabirizi went live on his Uganda People’s Interests Facebook page and contested the conviction.
According to Mabirizi, the ruling is not a surprise to him.
“It’s a celebration on my side that finally, the system has shown there’s no judiciary in Uganda.
Judges are just earning a salary, without any arguments to administer Justice in the name of the people as the constitution requires them,” said Mabirizi.
Last week, Ssekaana summoned Mabirizi to appear in court to show cause why he should not be committed to civil prison over contempt of court.
The controversial lawyer did not appear before the court but instead hired lawyer Noel Nuwe of Ojok and Company Advocates to represent him.
Mabirizi said Justice Ssekaana can not preside over a case where he (Ssekaana) is a complainant.
“There was no safeguard of fair hearing since the complainant is the same person presiding over the case,” he said.
For a long time, Mabirizi has been embroiled in a ‘battle’ with the judge.
