Robot Referees to be used at Club World Cup

The world football governing body, FIFA has made plans to push the live trials of the “limb tracking” technology developed to make off-side calls in the club world cup.

Chelsea will be the first team to experience the use of ‘robot referees’ when they compete in the Club World Cup.

“Robo-referees” is a semi-automatic system that actively uses computer programs and also algorithms to make and determine off-side calls. Its success at the club world cup would determine its availability at the 2022 World Cup. The World Cup kicks off in November.

The Video Assistant Referees (VAR) referees in place will then be alerted of the decision made by the technology, with the on-pitch referee then being subsequently informed.
