UPDF soldier on the run after shooting Traffic Officer in Ntinda

A joint team of security is hunting for a UPDF soldier who shot and injured a traffic police officer, Police Constable Robert Mukebezi as he tried to tow a UPDF Prado TX that was involved in an accident in Ntinda.

The incident happened on Sunday morning. According to the Police statement, Mukebezi was seated on the passenger side of a breakdown truck that was towing a green Toyota Prado TX that had knocked a signpost of Kobil fuel station.

It is reported that the army officers ordered the driver of the breakdown truck to tow the vehicle to Mbuya barracks instead of the police station.

The traffic officer turned down the request which culminated in a scuffle and exchange of gunfire.

The acting UPDF Spokesperson, Lt. Col Ronald Kakurungu, confirmed that incident saying the errant UPDF soldier is on the run.

“Preliminary information indicates that there was a misunderstanding between the traffic officer and the soldier regarding recovery of a military vehicle that was involved in the accident. In the process, unfortunately, the traffic officer was shot and injured in the leg,” Kakurungu said.

“We have very useful clues that will lead to his arrest. UPDF and Uganda Police have also launched joint investigations into the unfortunate incident,” he added.

Mukebezi is still admitted at Mulago Hospital and the police says that he is in stable condition.
