It’s now public secret that government wants to amend the constitution where only Members of Parliament will vote for the Head of State.

While commenting on the issue at hand, the Government Chief Whip and NRM Parliamentary Caucus Chairperson, Thomas Tayebwa said that as the ruling party Caucus, they are yet to receive the proposal to amend the Presidential Election Act where only Members of Parliament will vote for the Head of State.

He added that Ugandans need to appreciate the proposed system as it is one of the renowned political systems practiced by successful democracies like Great Britain, Italy, Canada, etc.

However, sections of the public especially from the opposition are already reacting against the ‘scheme’ saying it’s intended to deny the people of Uganda a chance to vote for their President. Below are some of the reactions;

Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) National Unity Platform Principal

“Museveni having been roundly defeated in the last election, now wants to take away the right of the people of Uganda to elect their President. Of course he plans to do this in order to impose his drunk son on us, well knowing that he can’t even get 5% of a popular vote. I thank the people of Uganda for the pressure these past three years. You can see how much you have exposed the dictator and made him do the most shameless, unthinkable things. But we must now stop at talking and act. Each one of us has an equal stake in this country. When we can, we shall, but don’t wait for us to tell you what to do. Think about what we can individually and collectively do to put an end to this madness,” Bobi Wine posted.

Mathias Mpuuga ( Leader of Opposition)

“We can now confirm that the regime nothing doers are in plot, this time to extend further the shelf life of their ailing leader by manipulating the electoral system! It matters no more whether they succeed in their evil scheme, the writing is bold; time up. If you are scared of universal adult suffrage, owing to old age; it is indelible communication to the mortality of humanity, just let go and let the country be,” posted Mpuuga.

Joel Ssenyonyi (National Unity Platform Spokesperson)

“First it was removal of term limits, then age limit removal, now this. The political conman continues to tear our Constitution apart to his benefit. Let’s prepare for a showdown!!, “ Ssenyonyi posted.

Winnie Kiiza (Former Leader of Opposition)

“I am so sorry, but I cannot trust Members of Parliament to decide who will be the President of our country. No, I cannot!,” stated Kiiza.

Dorreen Nyanjura (Deputy Mayor Kampala)

“The Kainerugaba project has officially kicked off; the constitution review commission is set to start country wide consultations on the amendment of the constitution for the president to be elected by MPs & not by universal suffrage. Uganda, wake up! ,” Nyanjura posted.
