Former Army Commander and head of the Alliance for National Transformation party Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu has warned that Uganda’s second tour in the Democratic Republic of Congo is a double-edged sword that, if not used well, may backfire.
According to Muntu, the UPDF’s first trip to Congo over a decade ago tainted Uganda’s image as a series of violations were committed.
He said that UPDF should use this second chance to clean the past image.
“The officers should focus on the mission of eliminating the ADF. They should not get involved in any other illegal activities,” said Muntu.
On Tuesday, UPDF launched airstrikes and artillery fire against the ADF rebel group in eastern DR Congo.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Henry Oryem Okello came out yesterday to disclose that the airstrikes and artillery fire that was launched against the ADF camps in DR Congo left a devastating toll as the UPDF ‘accurately hit’ the targets.
