Uganda is set to experience a more aggressive third wave of COVID-19 pandemic if the public violates the set Standard Operating Procedures (SOPS) in the face of limited vaccines, warn Ugandan scientists.

While giving an update about COVID-19 situation in Uganda, Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng said the thrid wave will be more lethal than the previous two waves as it is likely to peak at 4,000 cases per day, which is two times higher than the second wave.

Aceng said 15 percent of the patients will require admission at the health facility and about 9,331 patients may require High Dependency Unit or Intensive Care Unit admissions.

During the second wave, Uganda averaged on 1000 new cases per day. The figures overwhelmed the health sector resulting into many deaths and inflation of treatment requirements among other things.

The wave also forced government to announce a strict lockdown that helped in curbing down the rate of transmission of the virus. The second wave is currently on the downward tragetory.

Uganda is currently focus on procuring vaccines though the health ministry claims that its hard to directly get the required amount of vaccines and they are currently surviving on donations.

To date, the ministry has vaccinated 1,297,726 people with less than 350,000 completing the jabs. The cumulative confirmed cases are now 118,777. Recoveries stand at 95,375 while total deaths are 2,960.
