Zombo District Woman Member of Parliament (MP), Hon Afoyochan Esther has told parliament that the Ministry of Health should present to the House a COVID-19 vaccination plan for students across the country with the related costs.
According to Hon Afoyochan, the vaccination budget will give the House enough and a proper calculation of how they can mobilise funds for the exercise.
She then appealed the House to collectively resolve that each MPs contributes at least Shs2 million to support the purchase of the vaccines to facilitate students return to school.
Kira Municipality legislator Hon Ssemujju Nganda however, raised a procedural that the request by Hon Afoyochan can only be considered if it’s brought through a motion.
Hon. Jonathan Odur also strongly objected to the proposal saying that the law clearly provides how MPs salary can be deducted.
The 11th parliament has 529 MPs and with each contributing Shs2m, they can raise about Shs1 billion.
Uganda targets to vaccinate 22 million people before fully opening up the country. To date, only 1,150,676 people have at least received a jab. Vaccination is set to resume next week after government received about 500,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines.
