The past weeks have seen police intensify operations against those disobeying curfew time which is at 9pm and those found in bars. Bars have been closed since last year in March, but when President Yoweri Museveni started easing lockdown, many bar owners opened their businesses and have since been working ‘illegally.’
The territorial Police in Kampala Metropolitan yesterday night conducted an operation with an aim of enforcing Covid-19 Standard Operating Procedures. They raided bars that have been working in total disregard of the Ministry of Health guidelines.
A total of 1,100 suspects were arrested and over 50 motor vehicles impounded. The suspects were arrested from different bars around Kampala Metropolitan areas.
“We retaliate that bars are not yet opened. Police will not hesitate to arrest any suspects found violating stipulated guidelines.
All suspects arrested will be produced in courts of law on offences of doing a negligent act likely to spread an infectious disease,” said KMP Deputy Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire.
To date Uganda has 51,676 confirmed cases of COVID-19, 374 deaths; active cases on admission are 634 while those that have been vaccinated are 748,676.
