World Cross Country champion Joshua Cheptegei will be back on the track for the first time this year as he attempts at breaking the 5km world record he set at the Monaco Herculis Run last year.
Cheptegei set a record of 12 minutes and 51 seconds (12:51) on February 16, 2020, in Monaco after a brilliant display of solo running.
The golden boy is due to compete at the 11th edition of the Monaco Run this Sunday with a lot expected from him.
Cheptegei’s decision to participate in the Monaco Run come at a cost of him opting out of the National Cross Country Championships also scheduled for this weekend in Tororo.
The 23-years’ withdraw from the National Cross country championships provides a field day for other elite runners and newcomers to showcase their performance ahead of the national team selection for the 2021 Africa Cross Country Championships.
Cheptegei has been raising Uganda’s flag so high in the past three breaking three world records and scooping medals.
