With the country facing a social media shutdown prior to tomorrow’s general elections, giant telecom company MTN Uganda has today issued a statement on their Facebook page indicating that Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) directed them to suspend all social media and other online messaging applications.

The statement triggered an uproar from their followers who questioned why the giant telecom is communicating on Facebook a day after it had suspended social media.

“So why are you using the platform you have suspended how do you expect the public to get ur communication?????I pray one day Ugandans can take heart and suspend using telecommunications for a month u will also feel it,” said one bitter user.

Another user, Robert Omuhinde asked, ” why are you are using social media to inform us, why are you using VPN?”

A one Denis Kamau said “MTN you have also betrayed us. Why notify on the same social media instead of sending direct SMS to your customers? Shame on you”.

A one Franklin Muhumuza said, “MTN Uganda is also using VPN, Ki Uganda Kinyuma”.
