New lawyer in town! Kayihura approved for legal practice

Uganda Law Council has approved the former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Gen Kale Kayihura for legal practice.

Kayihura is among the applicants that are eligible for enrolment after they were approved during the Law Council meeting held on November 10, 2021.

He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Law from Makerere University in 1978 and later proceeded to the London School of Economics (University of London) where he graduated with a Master’s degree in Law in 1982.

When he returned to the country after his graduation, Kayihura joined the National Resistance Army in the bush. Following their successful takeover, Kayihura has since grown in military ranks.

He served as the IGP from 2005 until March 5, 2018, when he was succeeded by Martin Okoth  Ochola.

The Uganda Law Council is established by Section 2 of the Advocates Act Chapter 267(as amended by Act 27 of 2002) as the overall regulatory body of the legal profession in Uganda.

The Council consists of a judge appointed by the Attorney General after consultation with the Chief Justice, who is the chairperson of the Council; the Solicitor General or his or her representative; the President of the Uganda Law Society and; the Director of the Law Development Centre.
