Court orders Simbamanyo to pay Shs1.3bn in legal costs as Sudhir rebrands building to Gender & Labour House

Peter Kamya, the former owner of Simbamanyo House has suffered another blow as court has ordered him to pay a total of Shs1.3bn in legal costs.

Last year, Equity Bank auctioned Simbamanyo House and Afrique Suites in Mutongo following Kamya’s failure to settle a $10m (about Shs36b) loan. Simbamanyo, located on Lumumba Avenue in Kampala was acquired by property magnate Sudhir Ruparelia’s Meera Investments in October last year, while Afrique Suites in Mutungo was acquired by Luwaluwa Investments.

Kamya went to court protesting the sale of his properties and lost the case. He filed a total of six cases which were dismissed with costs.

Now, court has ruled that he must pay Shs600m to Equity Bank Uganda Limited, Shs400m to Sudhir’s Meera Investments Ltd and Shs300m to Luwaluwa Investments Ltd.

In the Commercial Court ruling, the Registrar Elias Kisawuzi held that the ban and the two business entities presented three bills for the cases which court dismissed with costs.

Meanwhile, Sudhir has completed the renaming and rebranding of Simbamanyo House of Gender & Labour House, in honour of the biggest tenants on the building, the Gender and Labour ministry.
