Kanyeihamba on Museveni pushing for removal of bail: Ugandans are more important than him and his NRM caucus

Former Supreme Court judge, Justice George W. Kanyeihamba has said President Yoweri Museveni and his NRM caucus must think twice before pushing for the removal of bail for murder suspects.

Recently, President Museveni has been speaking against granting bail to capital offense suspects especially those accused of murder. He said murder is not like assault and it needs to be prioritized as it is irreversible because someone who has died can’t come back.

Speaking during an interview today morning on a local TV, Rtd Justice Kanyeihamba said Museveni and his NRM caucus should not overestimate their importance as they should put Uganda above their self-interests.

“This country is bigger than President Museveni. Ugandans are bigger, stronger, and more important than him and his NRM caucus so he should think twice,” said Rtd Justice Kanyeihamba.

According to Kanyeihamba, Museveni wants to change the law to “everybody is guilty until you prove that you are innocent.

“But the law says everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty,” he said.

He added, “If he really wants to remove the right to bail, President Museveni, should first withdraw Uganda from all international treaties that guarantee bail globally.”

Last week, the NRM caucus rejected Museveni’s push to scrap bail and the party agreed to hold a two-week consultation in their respective electorates.

Opposition and section of the public have spoken against Museveni’s push.
