Only one Ugandan evacuated from Afghanistan

Stephen Wamala, a Ugandan National has been safely evacuated from Kabul, Afghanistan back to Uganda.

Wamala was evacuated by the US at the request of Uganda. He was working with an Afghan Wireless Comms Company as a heavy equipment Engineer.

When the Taliban militants took over Afghanistan three weeks ago, US started evacuating thousands of people especially those that it had a working relationship with.

Uganda is one of them and it’s said that a good number of Ugandans work in Afghanistan. Parliament tasked the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gen Jeje Odongo to explain government’s plan to safely bring back the people. He, however said that despite government efforts to try to evacuate Ugandans trapped in Afghanistan, majority of them refused to leave the Middle East country as only one person agreed.

Meanwhile, Uganda accepted to host 2,000 Afghan refugees and so far the first batch of 51 evacuees are already in the country.
