Lawyer Mabirizi drags Museveni to court for abandoning ‘Tibuhaburwa’ name; wants all his recent directives, appointments declared illegal

Lawyer Male Mabirizi has dragged President Yoweri Museveni to Civil Division of the High Court in Kampala for abandoning his ‘Tibuhaburwa’ name that he formally adopted in 2020.

In the recently concluded general elections, Museveni changed his name from Kaguta Yoweri Museveni to Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Kaguta Museveni.

“On October 6, 2020, Museveni swore a declaration to rectify his names and have them written in proper order in accordance with the law on the registration of names,” Mabirizi says.

However, according to Mabiriizi, Museveni seems to have abandoned the names he used when he was picking forms to contest for the presidential seat and thus, he is illegally owning the seat of the presidency where he has been giving directive and making appointments.

“By Deed poll dated 6th October 2020, YOWERI TIBUHABURWA KAGUTA MUSEVENI formally and absolutely renounced and abandoned the name YOWERI KAGUTA MUSEVENI and declared that he shall at all times from then in all records, deeds and instruments in writing and in all occasions that require the use of his full name, sign the name of YOWERI TIBUHABURWA KAGUTA MUSEVENI,” Mabiriizi noted.

Furthermore, Mabirizi defends his statement that, during the swearing in, he (Museveni) used names of Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Kaguta Museveni but while signing the related documents, the names that were indicated were Yoweri K. Museveni and thus therefore, all appointments made and signed as Yoweri K. Museveni should be considered null and void due to the fact that he is not the true President.

Mabirizi wants court to declare all directives and appointments made by the President since his election illegal since the person “elected” and “sworn-in” are different from the one making appointments.
