Heroic! Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai wins gold in the Women’s 3000m steeplechase, becomes first Ugandan woman to do so

Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai has won gold in the Women’s 3000m steeplechase. This is Uganda’s first Gold in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

 This is Uganda’s first female Olympic medalist in the Athletics Women’s 3000m Steeplechase. Also third Gold for Uganda since Akii Bua and Stephen Kiprotich. It takes Uganda’s overall medal tally at the Olympics to 10 and three at the on-going Tokyo Olympics.

The 22-year-old had commanding acceleration all through the race hence posting 9:01.45. United States’ Courtney Frerichs finished second after posting 9:04.75 while Hyvin Kiyeng from  Kenya  came third in 9:05.39.
