2,220 pupils’ results withheld as UNEB releases 2020 PLE results

The 2020 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) Results have today been released by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) at a scientific function from State House Entebbe. 2,220 pupils’ results have been withheld as a result of malpractice

Dan Odongo, the Executive Secretary UNEB said the highest numbers of withheld results are from the Rwenzori region.

“The board will release the names of the children whose results are held and will be given a fair hearing,” said Odongo.

Odongo also said that scouts and examiners reported a number of cases of suspected external assistance given to candidates inside the examination rooms by third parties. He said security personnel also arrested some people vending fake papers on the eve of the examination.

The results released on Friday also indicated that a total of 74,878 candidates totally failed the PLE exams and will definitely have to repeat the class. These represented 10.2% of the total number of candidates who sat for PLE exams in 2020.

According to UNEB, more children have qualified to proceed to post-primary than the previous year. Pupils in urban centers perform better than their counterparts in the villages.

A total of 749, 761 candidates from 14,300 examination Centres registered for PLE in 2020. 53% (395,855) of the registered candidates were females while 47% (353,957) were males. 68.4% (513,091) were funded by government under the Universal Primary Education (UPE) Program. Overall, the performance of the 2020 candidates is comparable to that of the previous year.

“The girls are better in English and the boys performed better in the rest of the subjects. In performance, there was an overall better performance in English and there is a slight decrease in performance in Maths and the rest have remained the same,” said Odongo Executive Secretary UNEB.

He said candidates, parents and other interested parties may use the Short Message Services (SMS) on mobile telecom networks which will post the results of candidates on their mobile sets instantly.

This will be done by typing PLE <Space> Full Index Number of the candidate, e.g. 003301/368 and send to 6600 on all mobile telecom networks.

For School administrations, he said results will be uploaded on the examination centre portals to enable schools download the results as they are officially released.

No hard copies of the results will be available at the UNEB offices for now, until a later date when conditions permit, he added.
