Government has cancelled the operating licences of three labour export companies and suspended several others over human trafficking and human rights violations.

“Some of these companies were involved in document forgery and their licences have not been extended. Others were due to complaints received by the Ministry of Gender,” says Agnes Igoye the Deputy National Coordinator  for Prevention of Trafficking in Persons at the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Earlier this month, the ministry released a report indicating that 214 people were trafficked from Uganda in 2020. This was a 15 percent decrease from the 2019 figure of 252 cases.

As of June 14, 216 labour exporting agencies are licensed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
