“We shall use national ID for money distribution” Prime Minister Nabbanja says Gov’t is yet to decide on ‘How much’ each vulnerable individual will get

Following the announcement yesterday by the Prime Minister Hon Robinah Nabbanja that government will not distribute food to the vulnerable groups during this lockdown period but will rather offer monetary support, many have been asking exactly how the strategy will be effectively implemented.

Speaking during an interview on NBS TV this morning, Rt. Hon. Nabbanja said that they will use the NIRA list and local authorities to identify these vulnerable people starting with the urban poor

Nabbanja believes that the mobile money strategy is the best option as it cuts many administration costs.

“I know the middle-men are not happy because they will be cut off. It’s easier to monitor Airtel and MTN as compared to food,” said Nabbanja.

For those who have no telephone numbers, Nabbanja said that they will use the vouchers.

When asked how much each individual will get, Nabbanja first stated that government has no money but they will try to offer what they can manage.

“We shall sit tomorrow with the various committees and come up with the “how much” each vulnerable individual will get. Vulnerable people are known, we have people who aren’t working now and those who haven’t worked for over a year,” she said.
