The Ministry of Health will tomorrow receive 175,200 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine that will be shipped via the COVAX facility—the world’s facility for universal access to COVID-19 vaccines.

According to the Ministry of Health Spokesperson, Emmanuel Ainebyona, this specific consignment is from Italy.

“Additional 175,200 DOSES OF Covid 19 vaccine from the CAVAX facility will arrive in Uganda on Wednesday 16, this specific consignment of the Astrazeneca vaccine is manufactured in Italy,”Ainebyona posted.

On March 10, the country launched the first phase of COVID-19 vaccination, targeting high-risk groups such as health workers, teachers, social workers, security personnel, the elderly, and those with underlying medical conditions.

The country received 864,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine via the UN’s Covax scheme, and more than 100,000 doses from the Indian government in March.

In the past week hospitals have reported running out or having acute shortages of AstraZeneca vaccines.
