DIAMOND LEAGUE: Cheptegei fails to win 5000m race for the first time in almost two years

The third meet of the 2021 Diamond League calendar took place in Florence, Italy, on Thursday, and a number of athletes ran to big results.

Uganda’s golden boy Joshua Cheptegei experienced his first loss over 5,000m in almost two years, with the last race he didn’t win coming in July 2019 at the Lausanne Diamond League, where he finished in fourth.

He finished sixth after posting 12:54.69. Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen won the men’s 5,000m in a European record of 12:48.45. Ethiopia’s Hagos Gebrhiwet crossed the finish line in second position with a time of 12:49.02 while Canadian Moh Ahmed earned a third-place with 12:50.12.

Cheptegei, the world record holder in the 5,000m however still stands as the overwhelming favourite to win gold in Tokyo this year.
