Why parliament is looking for special office space for Kadaga

Having enjoyed spacious offices at Parliament for over 20 years as she served as Deputy Speaker and later Speaker, Rebecca Kadaga will not be sharing an office with anyone as it is the case with other Members of Parliament who are not in cabinet or committees.

According to New Vision, Parliament is looking for a special office space for the former Speaker and Kamuli Woman Member of Parliament following her exit from the Office of the Speaker.

The office of the Clerk to Parliament is working on getting Kadaga a spacious office that befits her status as a former Speaker. Initially, Kadaga had an entire floor with a visitors’ waiting room, a boardroom, washrooms, and offices of the experts at the Speakers office among others.

But having lost the seat to her former deputy Jacob Oulanyah, who was backed by the National Resistance Movement-NRM party, she now has no office . But Parliament is the in process of getting her a self-contained office in case she misses out on the cabinet.

Although all MPs get office spaces, they lose the same when they are appointed ministers on the assumption that they will then be using the space in government ministries.

Parliament has rented Sudhir Ruparelia’s Kingdom Kampala Building to provide office space to 323 Members of Parliament, while the rest will be divided between the Parliament building and Queen’s chambers.
