Katikkiro Mayiga warns Gov’t against ‘political’ kidnaps

The Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga has asked government to immediately address the current wave of ‘political’ kidnaps that are rampant in the Buganda region.

Mayiga says that the act of kidnaping people and torturing them will incite chaos amongst the public if not quickly tamed. He says the behaviour can lead Uganda into war and both the actors of the kidnaps and civilians will suffer the consequences.

He wondered how the Internal Affairs minister Gen Jeje Odongo stood on the flow of parliament and said 31 Ugandans were kidnaped and government cannot trace them.

“How can a minister responsible for securing our internal security issue such a statement?” says Mayiga.

Last week, Gen. Jeje Odongo told parliament that government cannot trace 31 of the 44 who have allegedly been kidnapped in the country in the past month.

The minister said that only 13 of the reported kidnaps have been investigated and seven of these were not kidnapped but formally arrested for aiding and abetting terrorism.

The said ‘kidnappers’ are believed to be security operatives who are using ‘drone’ vehicles with no registration plates to whisky away arrested individuals.
