EC boss Byabakama takes ‘leave’

Reports have been making rounds on social media that the Electoral Commission chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama had resigned from his position as he has been out of office for a while.

The reports of his resignation emerged after the notice of the publication of the 2021 presidential election results dated February 1 was signed by his deputy Aisha Lubega.

However, according to the EC Commissioner Stephen Tashobya, Byabakama had accumulated leave and he found it convenient to take it this time round.

The former headmistress of Nabisunsa Girls Secondary School is now the acting chairperson of the commission.

Neverthless, the public is questioning Byabakama’s timing to take leave as the 2021 presidential election that he presided over is being challenged in the Supreme Court by the National Unity Platform flag bearer Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine.

Byabakama declared incumbent President Yoweri Museveni as the winner with 58.38% of the total votes cast while Bobi Wine got 35.08% of the votes.

Bobi Wine is contesting the results saying the election was rigged by Museveni with the help of the EC.
