Zebra was killed by soldiers – Museveni reveals he was supposed to meet the boxer

On Wednesday this week, Uganda woke up on sad news of the gruesome murder of Former Uganda Boxing Team Bombers Captain Isaac ‘Zebra’ Ssenyange.  Ssenyange was shot dead by yet to be identified gunmen who attacked his family in Bwaise, Kawempe Division in the wee hours of the morning.

His wife narrated that a group of security officers donning Counter Terrorism uniforms came to their home in search of Zebra who decided to run away. However, he was gunned down a few meters from their home by the same security officers.

While delivering his end of year speech yesterday evening, President Yoweri Museveni apologised for the death of Zebra as he confirmed that he was killed by security personnel.

“When I heard of the death of Isaac Ssenyange lias Mando Zebra, a former Bombers Captain, I telephoned his wife and she narrated to me the events. Zebra was meant to meet me; he was an NRM supporter who was doing so much for us.

The security people had gone to take Zebra and ask him some questions. When they got to his home at 12:03am, they knocked but people inside didn’t open. Zebra was in sitting room but instead went behind the house. Apparently he climbed over the fence and went some distance away,” Museveni said.

He added, “I am still investigating elements that caused this tragedy. Information was received that this unfortunate young person (Ssenyange) was training boxers who would then be used by some people to attack civilians. I got some information of how some of the youths trained by him were involved in controversy over a taxi park in that area.”
