Dr. Obuku Ekwaro, the former President of the Uganda Medical Association who is currently aspiring to be a Workers’ Member of Parliament in the 2021 general elections has said that Uganda has made the fight against COVID-19 political and overthrown science.
Obuku said right now the fight is being driven by politics as the social services including health have been sidelined.
“We need to invest in mass testing and continued sensitization. But we have invested in teargas other than investing in the real problem. Doctors are not happy. COVID19 is non-discriminatory,” Obuku said.
Obuku revealed that doctors haven’t seen salaries since September.
“I don’t know if the money went for oxygen,” he said before adding that, “People are not wearing masks because they have lost trust in the system and some don’t have the masks they were promised.”
He also faulted leaders for not acting responsible especially during the ongoing campaigns.
Uganda is becoming one of the high risk countries for COVID-19. To date, the country has total cumulative confirmed cases 25,730. 671 new cases were reported yesterday. Recoveries stand at 9605 while deaths are 220.
