Intrigue and factions in the ruling National Resistance Movement party is not new – and it is usually related to cash wrangles. Party Secretary General Kasule Lumumba is usually at the centre of these battles and this time she is being accused of falsely declaring that she has contracted Covid -19 to avoid accountability scrutiny for funds of the ongoing campaigns.
Last week, Lumumba said that three of her contacts had contracted Covid-19 and she also declared days later that she had contracted the disease and gone into isolation.
Lumumba is at the centre of the storm with delegates who attend incumbent President Yoweri Kaguta’s campaign meetings receiving less facilitation money than they are supposed to.
Last week, Parliament Speaker Rebecca Kadaga threw a spanner in the works she accused Lumumba of embezzling money meant for youth in the Busoga region. The youth reportedly received Shs150,000 each yet the party budget was Shs250,000.
Lumumba’s eternal foe, Dr. Tanga Odoi who is the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission at the NRM secretariat also has no kind words for Lumumba saying they are on the verge of being evicted from their offices on Plot. 13 Kyadondo Road in Nakasero for non-payment of rent over the past three years.
Sources say Lumumba was given Shs50bn to run the scientific campaigns leading to the January 14, 2020 elections but she had apparently run out of cash and party wants accountability. At the moment, this is not possible as she is self isolating.
