This is a chance for Makerere to be rebuilt – Education Minister Janet Museveni

Uganda’s oldest and biggest high learning institution, Makerere University over the weekend caught fire. The first fire that happened in the wee hours of Friday destroyed the institution’s iconic Ivory Tower and several offices of top managers.

In a space of just 10 hours, the second fire broke out on the west wing of the University main building again. This is the section that houses the Vice Chancellor’s office and Council Room. Police suspects that the walls and frames remained hot after the first fire was put out.

Yesterday, the Education Minister and First Lady, Janet Museveni visited the premises to assess the damage.

“This is tragic, not just for the university but the country. Investigations into the cause of the fire have begun and then we shall start the process of rebuilding the Ivory Tower,” Janet said.

She added, “For us who believe in God, we know that everything works out for our good. This is a chance for Makerere to be rebuilt, not just buildings but also the culture, the morals of the people and everything that pertains to our prestigious university.”
