Following the firing of four top officials from the Electoral Commission, Leonard Mulekwa has been appointed the acting secretary and accounting officer replacing Sam Rwakoojo who was among the officials fired last week. Mulekwa has been serving as the director of operations at the same commission (EC).
Justice Simon Byabakama , the Electoral Commission Chairperson confirmed Mulekwa’s appointment.
“I can confirm to you that we have appointed Leonard Mulekwa as the acting secretary and accounting officer to the commission. What we are going to do is to write to the finance Ministry to inform them about Mulekwa being the accounting officer and the process of accessing funds can be cleared,” Justice Byabakama said
Mulekwa’s appointment runs up to the end of January as the government standing order suggests that one cannot serve in an acting capacity for more than six months.
The other officials who were relieved of their duties include the head of Procurement Godfrey Wanyoto, the Public Relations Officer Jotham Taremwa and the Information technology Director Pontius Namugera.
When asked about the remaining vacant positions, Byabakama said that filling the position of accounting officer was more crucial and the rest of the positions would be filled later on.
