Last week, Democratic Party President, Norbert Mao declared his intention to run for the position of president in the 2021 general election. Mao said it is high time for the country’s oldest party to take up the top office.
“As Mao, I am also a Ugandan. I have the ability to stand. The Constitution allows me to contest. I have all the qualifications to take up the position,” Mao said.
Mao’s declaration attracted mixed reaction with many accusing him of frustrating plans of the opposition to field a single candidate against incumbent President Yoweri Museveni.
Speaking to the media yesterday, Mao insisted that DP has no room to join any coalition in the forthcoming elections. He said the will not take decisions made by people outside the party.
The presidential aspirant warned his party members against crossing to political parties that do not have clear structures saying they have no future. He said Bobi Wine’s People Power might be trending but the fact remains that it’s not a political party.
“A pressure group is like a school without a UNEB center number, when it’s time for national examinations they will look for a school with a center number,” Mao said.
