The proposed scientific elections by the Electoral Commission (EC) for the 2021 general elections is continuing to divide opinion as the ruling party NRM seems to be in support while the oppositions claim it is not feasible.

While addressing the nation last evening on COVID-19, President Museveni asked Ugandans to support the idea of a scientific election as it is the best alternative to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Museveni explained that the decision was reached after consultations with scientists who advised that it was the safest mode to conduct campaigns instead of postponing elections.

According to Museveni, the EC had three alternatives to pick from but they opted for the scientific election.

“They opted for number three because the danger is in holding of public gatherings. If you eliminate those and messages of the contestants are passed on through the radios, TVs, social media, the gathering for the elections themselves, can be safely managed with hand washing, and social distancing,” Museveni said.

He added, “This would remove the uncertainty that would be created by the postponement of the elections but also ensure that elections are held safely. I call upon Ugandans to support this option because it can work if all concerned do their assignment diligently.”
