Uganda is a wonderful country where you can get all extremes of life. The rich are too rich and the poor are so poor. During this COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen a lot of selfless people that have donated even the very little they have for others to survive, and we have also seen the selfish and greedy (not to be confused with our MPs), the ones that make sure they enrich themselves from the donations, rendering the vulnerable even more vulnerable.
In Rukungiri, news circulated yesterday that 170 bags of maize floor that were intended to be distributed as relief food to the vulnerable groups so that they don’t starve to death during this lockdown were stolen.
The suspected thieves of this food are Isaac Nuwamanya alias Kaharuza, Tukamuhebwa Robert the Rukungiri NRM Publicity Secretary, Beyamba Joseph alias Kakamba, and Kansiime David Rusheshe, all of whom are members of the Rukungiri District COVID-19 taskforce.
On hearing this, Police launched investigations into the matter and today, seven bags of maize floor have been recovered from the Beyamba’s house.
According to the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman Elly Maate, these thieves allegedly loaded 170 bags of maize floor onto Kansiime’s pickup truck Registration Number UBB 657F, and have since sold some of it to the public.
Maate said investigations are going on, but the suspects have been released on Police Bond.
It is quite sad that in times when people are starving around the country, some of those on the COVID-19 taskforce are stealing the food they should be distributing! How selfish!
