Yesterday, President Yoweri Museveni revealed how he is stuck in making a decision of suspending public transport as a preventive measure to stop the spread of COVID-19 pandemic. Museveni proposed that Ugandans who have no private vehicles should embrace riding bicycles to be able to implement the recommended social distance.
As usual after the address, Ugandans rampantly trolled the President for his idea. We are not here to defend the idea of the President but we only decided to look at the health benefits of cycling.
Riding a bicycle is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of health problems associated with a sitting lifestyle. It is also fun, cheap and good for the environment.
Cycling is mainly an aerobic activity, which means that your heart, blood vessels and lungs all get a workout. You will breathe deeper and experience increased body temperature, which will improve your overall fitness level.
The health benefits of regular cycling include:
- Increased cardiovascular fitness.
- Increased muscle strength and flexibility.
- Improved joint mobility.
- Decrease stress levels.
- Strengthened bones.
- Decreased body fat levels.
