Gayaza High School has been a scene of two fire outbreaks in the last three days, the first one happening on Friday evening at round 7:30 pm burning down Corby dormitory, and the second happening yesterday, burning down Kivebulaya dormitory.
Fortunately, no student injured in both fires, but their property like suitcases and mattresses were destroyed in the inferno. Police as always, are actively investigating the cause of the fires, but they believe there is a possibility of foul play, after ruling out an electric short circuit as the cause.
Kasangati Division Police commander Edison Muhangi said that they are investigating reports of an external arsonist that might have set the dormitories on fire through a window.
“We have ruled out the possibility of an electric short circuit but somebody must have lit the fire because it started from outside the dormitory and there were some students in the dormitory,” Muhangi said, according to the Daily Monitor, adding that Police has since recorded statements from all the students to aid them in their investigations.
It should be noted that over the years, school dormitories, offices and classroom blocks have been set ablaze by unknown individuals, whereas others have happened due to electric short circuits. In such incidents, students/pupils have lost their lives and property.
