People Power’s Ssegirinya Muhammad gets only one vote in KCCA Speaker elections, independent candidate Abubaker Kawalya wins position

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) councilors have today gone to polls at City Hall to elect their first Speaker to preside over all council meetings, a role that has been played by the Lord Mayor.

A total of 32 votes have been cast and People Power’s candidate councilor Muhammad Ssegirinya only gathered one vote and it happens to be the one he cast himself.

Independent candidate, Abubaker Kawalya from Rubaga division won the race with 17 votes while Forum for Democratic Change (FDC’S) Nyanjura Doreen came second with 14 votes. No invalid vote was registered.

As stipulated in the new KCCA Amendment Act 2020, election of the candidate to fill the position of the Deputy Speaker was also ongoing by the time we complied this article.

Contestants for the Deputy Speaker’s position are Doreen Sebuka, Alice Amon and Bruhan Byaruhanga, all councilors from Nakawa Division. The voting is being presided over by six chief magistrates.
