Police in Namutumba district arrested a 39-year-old midwife Rosemary Kulume over alleged theft of a newborn baby. Rosemary was intercepted as she tried to board a taxi to Kampala to deliver the baby.
According to the mother of the baby, Jalia Tayona, she came to Rosemary’s clinic located in Buyima zone, Busembatya town council in Bugweri district to deliver.
At around 2am, she gave birth to a bouncing baby girl but was shocked four hours later, after returning from taking a shower and found her baby missing.
Tayona reportedly raised an alarm that attracted locals who mounted a search for the midwife. She was arrested by Police who immediately interrogated her.
Rosemary admitted to stealing the baby and revealed that she was going to deliver the baby to her ‘client’ only indentified as Margret in Nakawa.
Margret reportedly has over 10 midwives spread across the entire country that she has hired to take newborn babies and later pay Shs2 million upon delivery. However, the accused did not disclose where Margret takes the babies.
Police spokesman for Busoga East, James Mubi, said investigations into the matter were still underway to establish why the accused was involved in theft of babies.
