The locust invasion in Uganda has only been taken seriously by government and a few people in the agriculture sector, but the general public seems to be taking it lightly and making jokes about it.

In a Parliament session today, the invasion was debated as Members of Parliament sought ways of safeguarding the country from the effects of the vegetation-destroying class of grasshoppers, and this is when Busiro County East MP Medard Lubega Sseggona also weighed in.

Sseggona said that it is time to utilise the available resources to fight the locusts in Uganda, and he proposed, not sprays or anything like that, but teargas. Yes, that itching gas used to disperse opposition politicians and other kinds of demonstrations.

“It is time to utilise the available resources to fight the locusts in Uganda. I propose we teargas them. If we teargas them, can they really survive?” Sseggona wondered.

Amuru District Women MP Lucy Akello said that locusts are usually sent by God as a punishment for the actions and behaviours of the people so she suggested we reflect and examine ourselves.
