Despite several measures that have been put in place by security agencies and bodaboda riders themselves, bodaboda robbery has continued to blossom in Uganda with robbers inventing new tricks almost on a daily.
The commonest trick has been robbers pretending to be passengers and ask the rider to stop after reaching their destination but in the process, they strangle him.
Yesterday on Sunday, people in Magere, Kasangati on Gayaza witnessed a fresh trick as one of the resident riders; Katumba John narrowly survived the trap.
Katumba who broke his arm and leg during the incident narrated that he was approached by a ‘client’ to offer service of transporting luggage to town to which he accepted.
The ‘client’ then asked him to help in carrying the luggage from his sitting room to the motorcycle. Unsuspecting Katumba once again accepted to help carry only to find himself falling in the deep pit that was covered by a carpet in the sitting room.
He said the pit is like 15 feet deep with live connected electricity wires.
“When I fell into the pit, electricity started shocking me but I braved and started shouting out loud,” Katumba narrated.
Luckily, nearby residents came to his rescue before hunting down his ‘client’ whom they beat up to near death. The house was demolished before Kasangati Police quickly invaded the crime scene where it recovered five bodabodas from the house that are suspected to have been robbed in the same way.
Police said further investigations about the new trick are ongoing and rescued suspect will give them the leads.
