Ugandan social media never sleeps and those that make news have a huge role to play in keeping it active. When State Minister for Gender and Culture Peace Mutuuzo said that the tradition of pulling female genitals should be banned, Ugandans took to their keyboards to start yet another inferno.
On Twitter, a one Hakim Kanyere asked the Honourable Minister if they should expect her to ban the circumcision of teenagers among the Bagisu since it also hurts.
Popular radio personality Bina Babie was quick to send a shout out to all those that visited the bush because the ‘anti-pulling’ Minister was looking for them. She went on to add the hashtag #IsPullingImportant?
One particular Black Knight was bitter as he asked the Minister to leave issues of the generals to the generals. He cautioned her to leave Baganda girls alone if she did not pull.
“That rubbish of being in a cave with overgrown grass is for your tribe and not Baganda,” he added.
Another was quick to suggest that the Queen of Buganda should come forth and address the issue before the Minister goes bananas on issues that do not concern her while a one Grace Nabataalo asked if Buganda Kingdom will issue a statement on the Minister’s directive.
A one Andrew Busingye commented and said, “I support this on underage girls but grownups let them do what they want with their bodies after all we know what we want, not the deep freezers that make us lose interest in two seconds.”
The social media inferno has been fuelled and it just cannot stop. We can only wait and see how far this goes. As of now, many Ugandans seem to agree that what is Caesar’s should be given to him.
