We all know that finding something unique is hard because it can look crazy at the start. Nevertheless, weird ideas can birth a successful business project. In this era of vast innovation, agricultural scientists in Kisoga, Mukono district have started a project that will see Ugandans earn money from their urine.

Dr Ronald Nsubuga Mutebi of African Scientist Organisation says their project is aimed at positively impacting the lives of Ugandans as they will earn money from their waste and at the same time see the agricultural sector boosted as the urine will be used to make fertilizers.

Mutebi says they are buying a liter of urine between Shs30,000 and Shs32,000.

“At least any normal human being urinates a litre every day. So instead of wasting it, keep it and make money,” says Mutebi.

He explains that human urine is naturally rich in nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus, which are very useful nutrients to the plants. He adds that at their centre, they add preservatives that help it cool and safe before applying it on plants.

“Stored human urine contains critical constituents similar to commercial fertilisers. Urine-fertilized plants have higher yields than non-fertilised plants,” he claims.

However, Mutebi said that people with a poor diet, those that eat silverfish, chapatti with beans ‘kikomando’ have poor quality urine and they will not buy it.
