Police has just arrested several members of the People Power Movement as they tried to make their way to Our Lady of Good Counsel Gayaza grounds, a venue they had organized to hold Bobi Wine’s first Presidential bid consultations.
Among the arrested include; the movement leader Bobi Wine, Spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi and coordinators Asuman Basalirwa, Latif Ssebagala, Benjamin Katana and Lewis Rubongoya among others. By press time the arrested were being held at Kasangati Police Station.
Before making arrests, Police first ordered all individuals that had made their way to the venue consultations were scheduled to be held to immediate vacate it.
In their response letter to the Kyadondo East legislator, Police said the consultations are supposed to be held in closed spaces as directed by the Electoral Commission (EC) and not on open grounds.
“We urge you to desist from holding rallies, campaigns and carrying out processions on public roads under the guise of conducting consultative meetings as this would totally be contrary to the objectives of consultations envisaged under section three of the Presidential Elections Act of 2005,” said EC chairman Justice Simon Byabakama in a letter to Bobi Wine.
