Early this week, we reported how Bank of Uganda’s Deputy Governor Dr Louis Kasekende’s days at the Central Bank are numbered for his contract is due to expire this month, and news reaching us is that President Museveni is not willing to renew it.
The same news says that the President’s choice of replacement is Makerere University Business School (MUBS) Principal Prof Waswa Balunywa.
Throughout the years, Museveni has shown admiration for Balunywa, praising him as a person that has always been on the right side of the liberation ideology.
The shakeup in the BoU top management is fuelled by the never ending scandals in the Central Bank where funds have been embezzled and appointment of junior staff not following the official recruitment process put in place.
All that has culminated into Kasekende and Governor Mutebile making us think Parliament inquiry committees are their new offices as they have spent more time explaining the scandals at the committees than they have spent at the bank.
The Deputy Governor job at BoU is seen as a warm up for Balunywa, but the main position he is poised to take is at helm, Governor, as Mutebile’s contract is set to expire too in 2021.
Towards the end of last year on December 29, 2019, Prof Balunywa and a delegation of MUBS staff association members paid a courtesy call on the President at his country home in Rwakitura.
