Presidential debates scheduled for December and January

Following a successful first televised presidential debate on January 15 2016 from the Serena Conference Centre, the Inter Religious Council Uganda-IRCU has announced the date for the 2021 presidential debates.

The debate will be held on December 4 and 5 2020 and the second in January 2 and 3 2021 under theme “Promoting a Peaceful and Inclusive 2020/2021 general elections.”

The debates will be organized by The Elders Forum Uganda (TEFU), National Consultative Forum (NCF), Inter Party Organization for Dialogue (IPOD) and Independent Electoral Commission.

Unlike 2016 where only presidential candidates were given space, the organizers have this time decided to give space to parliamentary candidates from selected constituencies to also debate.

“The presidential and constituency candidates’ debates will be a joint platform for political aspirants to not only share their manifestos and visions, but also address key pertinent issues arising from electorate.

Being an open and inclusive platform, the citizens will be able to engage their prospective candidates on the vision and development processes they have for the country,” organizers say in a statement.

Considering that these are special elections, COVID- 19 guidelines will have to be adhered to, and since the country registered the highest number (11) of duly nominated Presidential candidates, the organisers are still discussing the venue for the debates where selected officials will be allowed to be in the live audience.
