Government is in financial discussions to start phase two of distributing COVID-19 relief food. According to the State Minister for Relief and Disaster Preparedness Musa Ecweru, the second phase will target three million Ugandans.

Ecweru says a food distribution budget has already been drafted and it is over Shs100 billion and it is set to be presented to Cabinet today Monday, June 15.

Unlike the first phase that targeted only people in Kampala and Wakiso, Ecweru says the second phase of food distribution exercise will be conducted across the country with emphasis to the 40 borderless districts which are currently under strict lockdown.

The Minister says all the Shs59 billion that was given to the Ministry in the first phase was effectively utilized as they hit past their target.

“We had targeted to distribute food to 1.5 million vulnerable Ugandans around Kampala and Wakiso but we served 1.8 million people,” he says.

On the issue of financial transparency, Ecweru says they will account for every shilling that has been entrusted to them.
