Speaking during his last nation address, President Yoweri Museveni announced that Public transport shall start operations on June 4 2020.

Ministry of Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs was therefore tasked to develop guidelines for the safe opening of public transport in compliance with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) developed in consultations with Ministry of Health.

Minister for Kampala Betty Amongi has today Thursday announced the SOPs the Ministry has developed. Amongi revealed that all taxis must report at KCCA offices tomorrow to get a temporary route and parking chart for those willing to operate in the city centre.

“After obtaining stage/route where you will operate, you will then report to Ministry of Works and Transport to obtain a Temporary Route chart valid until 31st Dec. 2020,” Amongi said.

The minister disclosed that when public transport resumes, passengers will be required to line-up on clearly marked points in each stage which have been done in accordance with two meters as per the COVID-19 SOP for Public Service Vans.

“Public transport owners must adopt modalities for the protection of public transport workers during the pandemic with adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), reducing direct contact between staff and passengers,” she said.
