In his early addresses to the country about COVID-19, President Museveni repeatedly mentioned that Uganda would soon be able to manufacture her own surgical masks and Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for her frontline medical workers to enhance their protection during the fight against this pandemic.

Apart from Nyanza Textile Industries Limited (NYTIL) that has been making mostly face masks, President Museveni is set to commission Uganda’s first surgical mask factory certified by National Drug Authority (NDA) and Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) to make PPE for all the frontline medical workers in the country.

The factory to be commissioned is called LIDA Packaging Products limited and it is located in Mbalala, Mukono, according to the State Minister for Investment and Privatisation Evelyn Anite.

Recently, Uganda has made great strides in manufacturing as investors heed to President Museveni’s call to boost production and innovation in order to fill the gap that has been left by restricted imports due to the coronavirus pandemic that has hit hard global economies.
